There was an increased police presence at Riverbend High School to start the week, as members of the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office investigated a report of a threat depicting a young boy holding a rifle and referencing a school with the initials "RHS."

School administrators, detectives, and School Resource Officers launched "an extensive investigation" over the weekend after the post was reported which led them to identify a 15-year-old student as the culprit, the sheriff's office announced on Wednesday, April 12.

The threat was ultimately deemed not credible, and investigators say it "was not capable of developing."

After the case was reviewed by the Commonwealth Attorney's Office, the teen was charged this week with felony threats of death or bodily injured to persons on school property. The student was incarcerated at the Rappahannock Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

It was ultimately determined that the "threat" was part of a reported misguided prank.

“Every threat must be taken seriously,” Spotsylvania County Sheriff Roger Harris said. “Threats of violence (are) no laughing matter and even if students believe a threat is a joke, they should let an adult know rather than reposting or sharing images on social media.

"Doings o creates an undue panic and stress for students, parents, and faculty."
